The Witcher (Wiedźmin) fantasy book series by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski includes his short stories and novels. The stories take place in a world inhabited by creatures with magical powers, as well as ordinary beings, human and non-human races, fairies, dwarves, vampires, shapeshifters, and unicorns. The main character, Geralt of Rivia, deals with the extermination or neutralization of dangerous monsters for money, as his profession. In the world created by the author, witchers perform this activity, and they themselves are not harmless participants in the stories.

The books combine the characteristic atmosphere of folk tales, fantasy, Tolkienian mythology, irony, Eastern European medievalism, and Slavic-Polish mythology. The world of the stories is not black and white; the good are often also bad, and the twists of the plot are far from clichéd. This is why, along with the cynical-emotional expressions of the main character (not so subtly reminiscent of Philip Marlowe), some categorize The Witcher works into the noir genre.
